
Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday was born Elanora Fagan on April 7, 1915. Dubbed "Lady Day" by her musical partner and close friend Lester Young, Holiday combined the blues, gospel, and jazz with steady, distinctive tempo uncustomary of the era. Holiday's music heavily influenced what would evolve into pop music many years following her death on July 17, 1959. Holiday has been celebrated as one of few musicians who "changed the art of American pop vocals forever."
