
The Dave Matthews Band formed in 1991 by South African vocalist and guitarist Dave Matthews. Matthews selected performers from Virginia to join him in the jam, with band mates Stefan Lessard as a bassist, Leroi Moore as saxophonist, Boyd Tinsley as a violinist, Carter Beauford as drummer, and keyboardist Peter Griesar. The band was reconfigured in 1993 when Griesar left and again in 2008 when Moore passed away following an ATV accident. Jeff Coffin, of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, joined the band following Moore's death. Rashawn Ross and Tim Reynolds also joined the band as full time touring members.
The Dave Matthews Band earned recognition by touring college campuses and created a strong following by blending jazz, classical, soul, rock, bluegrass, and hip hop to deliver distinctive genre of music. During the band's early years, live performances generated word of mouth buzz which grew to international attention. In 193 the Dave Matthews Band released their independent album Remember Two Things compiled of live songs recorded from performances at The Flood Zone in Richmond, Virginia, and The Muse Music Club on Nantucket, Massachusetts. One year later the Dave Matthews Band released their first album entitled "Under The Table And Dreaming" and worldwide success ensued.
