Capella University

Capella University is a for-profit purely online university with administrative office located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Owned by the publicly traded Capella Education Company, the university traces its roots to 1993 with the opening of the Graduate School of America which was later renamed Capella University.

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), Capella University in the year 2000 became the first online academic institution to participate in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) of the NCA which requires members to adhere to an ongoing annual review of its operational processes and measure outcomes within each of nine different quality criteria rather than the usual 10-year review of non-participants.

As an online university, Capella has adopted an open enrollment admission policy – an unselective and non-competitive college admission process wherein the only criterion for undergraduate entrance is a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate or its equivalent. The majority of the learning takes place via the Internet with the online environment organized  into courserooms. For certain graduate degree programs though, like clinical psychology, there are residency requirements.

Capella offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees in such fields as business, information technology, education, psychology, public health, public safety and human services. It also offers certificate programs. All in all, the online school has over 1,050 online courses available.

Cost of tuition varies depending on the specific degree program chosen. Financial aid is extended in the form of loans, grants and scholarships for qualified students.

For 2009, Online Education Database (OEDb) ranked Capella University 23 out of 44 Best Accredited Online Universities.
