The Catahoula Bulldog is a hybrid, a cross between the American Bulldog and the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. The name comes from an Indian word meaning “clear water.” Originating from Southern United States, the breed is said to be around for over 100 years used by ranchers for hunting and herding. Weighing 75 to 100 pounds and standing at 24 to 26 inches, it has the muscular build of the American Bulldog and the coat colour varieties of the Catahoula Leopard Dog. It has strong and powerful jaws, a broad muzzle with a slightly pronounced stop and a deep, well-muscled chest. Eye colour comes in a wide range, from brown, ice blue, gold, emerald green or even a combination of all these colours. The coat also comes in a wide variety of colours from merle to pure white, is short and smooth and typically does not have an undercoat. However, it can grow one in cold climates.
Like most hybrids, the Catahoula Bulldog possesses the desirable qualities of both breeds - it has the massive weight, height and strength of the American Bulldog and the excellent hunting and herding skills of the Catahoula Leopard Dog. Highly intelligent, the breed is reputed to be an impeccable watch, guard and catch dog. As a house pet, it can be easily trained and is affectionate, docile and loyal towards its family.
