Catalan Sheepdog Dog Breed

The Catalan Sheepdog or Catalonian Shepherd is an ancient herding and guard dog originating from Catalonia, Spain. It is said to have descended from Pyrenees sheepdogs existing during the ancient Roman times. This working breed weighs 45 to 60 pounds and has a height of 17 to 19 inches. It has a strong, slightly convex head, well-proportioned body with a straight back. The ears are triangular and fall close to the face, eyes are round and dark amber with black rims and the nose is large and black. The coat is long all over the body with a beard and moustache on the face, rough and either flat or slightly wavy with a thick undercoat. Colours come in a range of various shades - the base colour is fawn, gray or sable with a mixture of either fawn, reddish-brown, gray, black and white.

The Catalan Sheepdog is intelligent and easy to train, true to its heritage as a working dog breed. It is energetic and courageous and has a well-balanced temperament. Not only does it excel in herding and guarding flock, it also does well in agility and obedience. As a sheepdog it can be independent, working with minimal directions from its owner. At home the Catalan Sheepdog is loyal and gentle with children. It is considered an “all-around” dog and a great companion, known to have strong protective instincts towards the cattle it is guarding and its owner’s family and property. It is more suitable to outdoor living and requires a daily routine of exercise for its high levels of energy. It has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.
