Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) is a regional, coeducational, public educational institution of higher learning that originated from the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School established in 1906. It occupied the site of the old Central University which was itself founded in 1874. This same site is now occupied by the main campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

Aside from its main campus in Richmond, Kentucky, the university has several satellite campuses in Corbin, Danville, Fort Knox, Hazard, Lancaster, Manchester and Somerset. The university went through the long process of development and change as it became a four-year institution known as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College in 1922, the Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in 1930, the Eastern Kentucky State College having the right to award non-professional degrees in 1948 and finally the Eastern Kentucky University in 1966 as an institution accredited to award graduate degrees in academic fields other than education. With these changes in names came the corresponding increase in size and stature.

Eastern Kentucky University at present offers varied programs leading to associate, baccalaureate and master’s degrees. Joint doctoral programs are likewise offered with partner institutions. In spite of its expanded curriculum, it continues to give importance to its historic purpose of producing quality elementary and secondary level teachers. In the same breath, it continues to develop a stronger liberal arts curriculum in several fields of study.

Among the other educational options made available by Eastern Kentucky University are the Adult Education Courses, the Challenge Course, the Team Innovations Program and Distance and Online Learning. The University Instructional Development Center, the OSHA Training Institute Education Center was established in EKU in 2005 and 2003 respectively to support in the development of instruction by faculty and to offer a variety of safety and health training.
