The French Foreign Legion is a branch of the Armed Forces of France. It is comprised mostly of foreigners. It is richly steeped in mystery and tradition.
The legion was specifically created for foreign nationals wishing to serve in the French Armed Forces, but commanded by French officers. However, it is also open to French citizens, who amount to roughly 1/4 of all those who are in its ranks.
Recent deployments of the French Foreign Legion include the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Guyana.
