Phlegm is a substance that is secreted by the respiratory system. It is viscous in nature and is expelled by coughing. Expelling phlegm can actually be a good thing because it means that your body is getting rid of irritants. However, if you are expelling excessive amounts of phlegm for prolonged periods of time, there might be something wrong. More so, it is important to check the color or hue of the phlegm as yellowish or greenish phlegm is usually a sign of infection.
The best way to get rid of excessive phlegm is to determine what is causing its production. For example, if you have bronchitis or a similar condition, then your doctor can prescribe antibiotics and other medication that can treat the root cause. When the root cause is addressed, it will follow that the phlegm production stops.
There are also home remedies which can help give you relief. Traditionally, herbal medicine has proven effective against respiratory conditions. Products with menthol, such as eucalyptus and peppermint, are very good in providing relief from excessive phlegm. You can get creams or ointments - even oils - that you can rub on your chest and back. Alternatively, some of these may be placed right under your nose. The good thing about these products is that you can use them as often as you like.
Lozenges and cough drops are also helpful in relieving discomfort due to excessive phlegm. They are available over the counter and are quite affordable as well. Do try to get those which are sugar free, or low in sugar, to avoid potential problems due to high sugar content.
