How Do I Treat a Split Toenail?

A split toenail can be painful, although sometimes, it does not really cause any pain but is merely inconvenient. The possibility of snagging a split toenail on clothing does present a problem, as a sudden force may totally pull part of the nail off – and that will definitely be painful. There are many reasons that one can get split toenails. Physical injury, especially for those who are physical active is a common reason. Dryness of the skin and nails is also another reason for split toenails. Sometimes, split toenails are the result of an underlying condition.

The best way to treat a split toenail is to determine what caused it in the first place. If the cause of your split toenail is any of the first two mentioned above, the treatment is fairly straightforward. If you injure your toe due to sudden force, and your nail gets split, you really do not have to do anything about it. The toenail will heal on its own over time. It is, a good idea, however, to make sure that the toenail is secure and will not be subject to more stress.

If the split toenail is due to dryness of the skin, you can treat it by using moisturizers on a regular basis. There is, however, a condition which makes the nails brittle, and this is due to old age. There isn’t much that you can do about it, but moisturizing will help as well. Getting a pedicure will also help get rid of minor splits.
