Large Munsterlander Dog Breed

Also known as the Grosser Munsterlander Vorstehhund, it originated from Munster, Germany. This breed of gun dog is easily distinguishable from the Small Munsterlander by size and also with its black and white colour. It weighs from 50 to 70 pounds and has a height of 23 to 25 inches. It has a skull that is adequately broad and slightly rounded, a black nose, wide nostrils and slightly rounded lips. Its eyes are medium in size, heavy lidded and dark brown in colour, ears are broad with a rounded tip and hang close to the head. It has firm, strong feet with black-nailed toes. Its coat is made of long and dense hair, well-feathered on the front and hindlegs and on the tail. The hairs on the head are short and smooth. Coat colour on the head is solid black with a white blaze, snip or a star. The body is white or blue roan with black patches. It could also come in flecked or ticked combination.

The Large Munsterlander has been used as a retrieving dog and is known to be able to work in all kinds of terrain and weather. In England, Germany and Canada, it is valued for its pointing skills and its retrieving precision. They love to be in the water and they are not difficult to train although they are slow to mature. As a household companion it is obedient, friendly and loyal. They are good with children and other animals but they do not make for good guard dogs. They can live from 12 to 13 years.
