In Literature, What Is the Muse?

The word “muse” originated from Greek mythology, which is one of the most interesting parts of literature. The Greek god Zeus and Mnemosyne had nine daughters called the Muses. They are the goddesses who inspire the creation of arts and literature. They were believed to be the source of knowledge that was contained in poetic lyrics and myth.

Artists, writers, poets and musicians have created works inspired by people they refer to as their muse. A muse is a source of someone’s inspiration. It may be someone who has such influences on another person that he or she becomes the focus for a person’s creative work. A muse can also be something that stimulates the mind and emotions to a higher level of creativity.

Muses have inspired many great minds, including one of the world’s most popular artist, Pablo Picasso. His muses are embodied into his art work. Each found and lost love in his life became his subject. The point from the first flush of romance to the deterioration of the relationship can be seen in his art. The invocation of muse in the English poetry is an indication that the speaker is working inside the poetic tradition. The spirit world is sometimes call on by a musician to inspire his music. As their idea of the muse originated from a spiritual world, the muse is seen as coming from a different dimension.

Many people see the muse as different forces that possess the artist and help to create his or her work. Whether the muse is a spirit or a person of flesh and blood, it is true that the world of arts is indebted to them. Without these inspirational elements that motivated the artists, a large part of painting, music, and literature would be missing from the world.
