Mioritic Sheepdog Dog Breed

This flock guard breed originated from the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. This is a relatively new recognized breed. Female dogs stand at a height of 25 to 28 inches while the male has a height standard of 27 to 29 inches. Weight is proportional to the size, ranging from 100 to 120 pounds. This is a massive breed – the head is massive, the skull is broad, the neck is muscular and the muzzle is strong. It has a broad nose that is black in colour. Its ears are set high, triangular and hang on each side of the head. It has medium-size eyes, oval shaped and amber or hazel in colour. The chest and shoulders are broad and the tail is set on high. It has a long and abundant coat that covers its entire body including the head and feet. The top coat is slightly wavy and rough and the undercoat is dense and smooth. The base colour is either white, light cream or pale gray, appearing at times with patches of these colours.

The Mioritic Sheepdog is a working breed and a good one at that. It is fearless, vigilant and courageous and an incorruptible guard. It is a fierce protector of the flock and can stand against all possible attackers including bear, wolf and lynx. As a companion dog it is disciplined and very attached to its owner. It is also good with children and devoted to the family. It is clam and well-mannered indoors but it does require plenty of space to run around. It has no known health problems and can live from 12 to 14 years.
