15th Annual Polar Bear Plunge Today in Maryland

The 15th Annual Polar Bear Plunge is set for the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis, Maryland today. Today's Polar Bear Plunge known as "Plungapolooza" is the largest annual winter event in the U.S. The event requires participants to plunge into the icy water despite low, mid winter temperatures to raise money for the Special Olympics. In 2008, an estimated 12,000 people took the Polar Bear Plunge and raised over $2 million dollars for charity.

Many Polar Bear Plunges occur throughout Canada and the United States, in places like Seattle, Minnesota, New York's Coney Island Polar Bear Club, New Jersey, Boston, and Lake George, New York. All Polar Bear Plunges within the U.S. raise funds for the Special Olympics.
