Abby Sunderland is presumably lost at sea. The Thousand Oaks teenager who set sail from Marina Del Ray on January 23, 2010 with the hope to become the youngest person to sail the globe at the age of 16 activated an emergency beacon locating device on Thursday, June 10, 2010 after hitting rough seas. Officials from the Reunion Islands and Australia report that the ship nearest to the South Indian Sea location Abby sounded her emergency locating device is approximately 400 miles away . Officials also believe that winter storms with waves 50 to 60 feet high contributed to Abby's disappearance.
Abby's father, Laurence Sunderland, as well as fans, friends, and family members fear the worst and hope for the best. Laurence and Abby's family last spoke to her on Wednesday, June 10, 2010. Laurence said "Everything seemed to be under control...but then our call dropped and an hour later the Coast Guard called." Abby's older brother, Zac, stated "Everyone's praying. It's kind of a waiting game at this point. The main hope is to get a plane out there."
