Anna Chapman arrested in an 11 man Russian Spy Roundup. Chapman is a beautiful, twenty eight year old, once divorced, online real estate agent who founded a $2 million dollar NYC area company. Undercover agents posed as Russian officials nabbed Chapman in a covert operation which lead to five arrests in New York on Monday, June 28, 2010. Six additional arrests were made across the globe in connection to a "long term, deep cover" investigation involving the use of spy tactics like an online spy network, invisible ink, mysterious meetings, and secrets sent over shortwave radios.
Russian officials, including the Russian Foreign Ministry, have rendered the spy roundup "baseless and improper." In an official statement addressing the arrests issued on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, the Ministry stated: "We do not understand what prompted the U.S. Justice Department to make a public statement in the spirit of Cold War espionage. Such incidents have occurred in the past, when our relations were on the rise. In any case, it is regrettable that all these things are happening on the background of the 'reset' in Russian-U.S. relations announced by the U.S. administration." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavroy made a vague announcement in reference to the timing of the arrests, per CNN.
Officials in the United States stand firm. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz attended a Manhattan hearing Tuesday, June 29, 2010 and stated that "the evidence here is overwhelming. It is simple. It is strong."
