Bin Laden Blames Attack on Gaza on U.S. Decline

CBS News has downloaded a speech purported to contain the voice of Osama bin Laden in which the al Qaeda leader stated, "The great and swift decline in America's influence is one of the most important motivations for Israelis to wage such a barbaric attack on Gaza, in a bid to try and make use of the last days of (President) Bush's mandate and the neo-conservatives."

The tape was released on the 19th day of fighting in the Gaza Strip. Israeli troops have been targeting Hamas militants, but according to Palestinian physicians, less than half of the 940 people who have lost their lives in the conflict have been combatants.

Osama bin Laden also took a swipe at President-elect Barack Obama, saying that he will be unable to find a solution to the economic issues that the United States currently faces.
