Car Thefts Down, but So Are Theft Recoveries

Are you a "glass half full" person? If so, here's the good news: for 2009, the FBI reports that car thefts are down by 17% and are now at the lowest levels in 20 years. Are you a "glass half empty" person? Then here's your bad news: according to the same FBI report, stolen car recoveries are also down, falling to just 42% of thefts in 2009. That's the worst recovery rate in 25 years.

The FBI credits the decline in thefts to enhancements in technology (such as ignition immobilizers) that make it difficult for amateur thieves to steal vehicles. Professional thieves, on the other hand, are getting more proficient at stealing high-demand vehicles, leading to the lower recovery rates.
