Chicago is the latest area of a massive fish kill, with thousands of gizzard shad frozen in ice and floating dead in the water of the lakefront. Eyewitnesses first reported the latest mass animal kill on Thursday, and flocks of Canadian geese and mallard ducks have stepped in to be nature's clean up crews. Carl Vizzone, a North Side fisherman and mate on the Perch America vessel stated to CBS News: "This is not normal" after witnessing the scene on DuSable and Diversey harbors.
The dead shads are in the 3 to 5 inch range and are members of the herring species. Other fish have not been affected by the kill. No official count of the dead fish has been performed though experts predict the kill is in the tens of thousands range, if not more.
