Diana Canter charged with having sex with her student in Christiansburg, Virginia. The thirty four year old former 11th grade English teacher at Christiansburg High School was released from a Montgomery County Jail on $5,000 bond. Canter was arrested Tuesday, July 27, 2010 for eight felony counts of "taking indecent liberties with a minor" while in a custodial or supervisory position. If convicted, Canter faces five years in prison for each felony charge. Canter resigned from her job on July 27, 2010. Christiansburg High School refused comment. Canter could not be reached for comment.
Police reports indicate that Canter had a sexual relationship with a student within the school system from December 2008 until August 2009. Montgomery County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court documents reveal that dates from January, February, March, and April 2009 include two charges from each date. Documents also indicate that not one of the offenses occurred on the school's campus. Town of Christiansburg spokesperson Becky Hawke Wilburn, stated in an interview with the Roanoke Times that the boy contacted the police department to report a "prior sexual relationship with Diana Canter, a teacher at Christiansburg High School, while he was a minor going to Christiansburg High School." Police launched an investigation into the boys allegations and obtained warrents from the Montgomery County School Board office regarding "documents, letters, files, disciplinary actions, and complaints" sent to Canter from August 2008 until June 2009.
Montgomery County Public School Records reveal that Canter had worked within the Christiansburg School System since 2000 earning $45,150 dollars per year. Canter was described as a "very competent, very professional...good teacher" by Christiansburg High School PTSA President John Beamer. Beamer had two children who were Canter's students and never suspected misconduct.
