Dr. Kermit Gosnell, Philadelphia Abortionist, Charged With 8 Counts of Murdering Babies

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a sixty nine year old physician from West Philadelphia, has been charged with 8 counts of murder for killing 7 babies and one patient after performing late term abortions. Gosnell reportedly earned millions of dollars for performing, as local CBS media reports maintain, "as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could." Prosecutors also indicted nine of Gosnell's employees.

Official court documents suggest that Gosnell's staff would induce many minority, immigrant, or poor pregnant women by day so that by night, Gosnell would deliver the babies, born alive, to only kill them with scissors. District Attorney Seth Williams stated during the case that Gosnell "induced labor, forced the live births of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, and eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord" within Gosnell's Women's Medical Society. Gosnell is also charged with the murder of a 41 year old patient who died due to cardiac arrest caused by a Demerol overdose upon seeking an abortion. Gosnell was reputed as being one of the few physicians who would perform an abortion after 24 weeks gestation, and many women traveled from overseas for his "services." Williams stated: "People knew near and far that if you needed a late-term abortion you could go see Dr. Gosnell."

State regulators had not inspected Gosnell's clinic since 1993 and repeatedly ignored multiple complaints filed against him. Authorities coincidentally discovered the horrific practice upon initial investigations of drug related complaints. Williams reported investigators discovered aborted fetuses "scattered throughout the building. There were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose." Gosnell's clinic was closed upon the morbid discovery and his license was suspended.

The clinic was shut down and Gosnell's medical license was suspended after the raid.
Gosnell also faces approximately 46 malpractice suits. Gosnell never completed his residency in obstetrics or gynecology but did get a medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. Gosnell was also never board certified.
