British actor Patrick McGoohan has passed away at the age of 80. He died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica after a brief illness.
McGoohan was often called on to play the part of a villain in movies and on TV, but he was best known for his role as a spy in two 1960s TV series, "Secret Agent" and "The Prisoner."
"Secret Agent" ran from 1965-66, and featured McGoohan in the role of John Drake. The hour-long drama was based on "Danger Man," a half-hour show in which McGoohan played the same role.
"The Prisoner" ran from 1968-69 and became a cult classic. McGoohan played a secret agent who was kidnapped after his retirement and held captive in an isolated village by persons unknown. After his capture, he was known only as "No. 6."
McGoohan played the role of King Edward I in "Braveheart," in 1995. He received Emmy Awards for guest roles on "Columbo" in 1975 and 1990.
