Former pro boxing champion Vernon "The Viper" Forrest was killed Saturday night when he tried to defend himself from being robbed. The robbery turned into a gunfire exchange between Forrest and the robber which claimed Forrest as its victim.
The incident occured at Chevron on Whitehall Street in Southwest Atlanta according to the Atlanta police. It is reported that the robber tried to rob Forrest at gunpoint not realizing that he was carrying a weapon too. Forrest followed the robber and the men exchanged gunfire at Fulton Streets, where Forrest was shot seven to eight times in the back according to Detective Keith Meadows from Atlanta police.
Forrest had recently won the WBC middleweight championship and was a part of the 1992 US Olympic team which competed in Barcelona, Spain.
