JJ Lehto, the Finnish driver who enjoyed successful careers in both Formula One and endurance racing, was seriously injured in a boating accident earlier this month. The accident took the life of Lehto's unnamed passenger, identifed only as a close friend of the retired drivers. Lehto was found to have a blood alcohol accident over the legal limit after the accident, and excessive speed was believed to be the primary cause.
The accident took place near Lehto's home in Finland, in a narrow canal with a maximum speed limit of 5 kilometers per hour. Based on data from the crash scene, Lehto, who remains hospitalized, was estimated to have been travelling at 70 kilometers per hour when his boat struck a concrete bridge support.
