Friday the 13th- Superstitions and Phobias

Do you have any idea how many strange phobias are out there? Have you ever heard of Friggatriskaidekaphobia? Yes, it sounds quite naughty but Friggatriskaidekaphobia actually refers to the fear of Friday the 13th which was also popularly called as the “black Friday”.

People who suffer from Friggatriskaidekaphobia are afraid that on Friday the 13th something bad is going to happen to them. Friday the 13th means that the 13th of every month falls on a Friday and that is what freaks out people suffering from Friggatriskaidekaphobia. Friday the 13th happens at least three times each year and this is the worst possible day for the people who have the phobia.

There is another interesting phobia known as riskaidekaphobia which makes people fearful of the number 13th no matter which day of the month it falls on. Friday the 13th has a lot of superstitious content surrounding it and many people refer to it as an unlucky day. However, scientists actually gathered evidence to see if there was any truth to it. As was proved by the data of fatal car accidents on Friday the 13th, this supposedly “cursed day” is no more dangerous than any other day. The study done by the University of Helsinki was published in the “BMC Public Health” journal in 2004.
