GM Wants Federal Mandate for Event Data Recorders

A Texas congressman’s is pushing to require event data recorders in all vehicles sold in the United States, and General Motors has become the first automaker to support his efforts. Event data recorders, or EDRs, capture data from multiple sources in the seconds before an airbag is deployed. They can be useful for accident reconstruction, but some manufacturers have used more advanced (and longer recording) EDRs to deny warranty claims if they determine a vehicle was driven recklessly. Unless the federal mandate excludes manufacturers and insurance companies from using the EDR data against the customer, this mandate could prove to be very costly to consumers.
