The initial Gooding & Company classic automobile auction at Amelia Island has produced a record setting $16.1 million dollars in sales. Several cars exceeded pre auction estimates, including a 1931 Voisin (estimated at $2 million, sold at $2.75 million) and a 1961 Porsche RS61 Spyder (estimated at $1.5 million, sold at $1.7 million). Other cars did not fare as well, including a 1928 Bugatti Type 35C, wich sold at $900,000, or about $500,00 below pre auction estimates.
If high end auto auctions are a barometer for the economy, perhaps we've turned a corner.
