Houston, Texas officials have plans to cover the city with a dome to protect the city from severe weather. Architects, scientists, and engineers have teamed to construct a dome over the city to protect it from hurricanes, cyclones, and temperature extremes. The DomeProject has residents worried and science fiction fans estatic.
A reportedly lightweight, durable, and environmentally friendly plastic dome may be constructed using pentagon shaped panels and ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) to be the first city in the United States to be domed. The apex or the highest point of the dome, would have hinged panels that could open or shut as needed to allow ventilation as well as humidity and temperature regulation. The DomeProject will be similar in construction to Beijing, China’s National Aquatic Center used for the 2008 Olympics.
The team behind the DomeProject plan assure that many features will provide safety to inhabitants and intends to address concerns before the project is complete. Financial funding and vehicles are still unsecured in terms of construction, though it has been noted that mobile cranes and specially designed aircraft would be employed.
