Jenson Button, driving for McLaren Mercedes, gambled on an early switch of tires to take the victory in Sunday's Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. Starting in the rain, Button was the first to switch from rain tires to soft compound slicks before the track had dried. While his first few laps on cold tires were off pace, Button was soon taking seconds off the lap times being turned by competitors; he drove a briliant race and hung on to take the victory. Robert Kubica, driving for Renault, took second followed by Felipe Massa in a Ferrari for third.
The race was filled with drama, including a heart-stopping crash when Kamui Kobayashi lost his front wing and plowed into Nico Hulkenberg and Sebastian Buemi at full speed. Miraculously, all of the drivers involved escaped serious injury. Ongoing battles between Lewis Hamilton and Mark Weber, as well as a back of the pack scrap between Michael Schumacher and Jamie Alguersuari, made the race more exciting than your typical F1 event.
