Kentucky's LEX 18 News was first to report a Kentucky man was forced to eat his own beard after a soured business transaction ended in an altercation. In May, 2009, Harvey Westmoreland of Laurenceburg, Kentucky, and his brother, Joseph, attempted to sell Harvey's lawnmower to some friends. The deal went bad when, as Harvey's stated in the LEX 18 interview: "[E]verything just went haywire...They cut my beard and forced me to eat it."
Harvey went on to tell LEX 18 the story of the bizarre night. Harvey stated: "Troy offered to buy it [the lawnmower] from me for two hundred and fifty dollars. I paid twenty bucks for it. He thought I was trying to cheat him. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, there were knives and guns and everything just went haywire..."
Police reports indicate that Harvey's beard was chopped and Joseph was "mark[ed]" after Holt and Hill threatened to kill the brothers if they called for help. The incident was later reported to local authorities. Hill and Hold pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the incident. Sentencing for Hill and Holt will be on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 in Lawrenceburg Circuit Court. Hill and Holt are expected to be fined in addition to a sentence to supervision diversion.
Comments posted at LEX 18's website following Harvey's story suggest there's more going on in the small rural town than what is being presented by Harvey and the news organization. According to comments posted after the LEX News report, the Westmoreland brothers had made obscene comments regarding Holt's 13 year old child and also were having affairs with his girlfriend.
