Mass School Shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut Leaves U.S. In Mourning

Over 28 people, including 20 children ages 5 through 10 years, have passed away following a massive shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut which occurred before 9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012. Officials from many law enforcement agencies have confirmed that 20 year old Adam Lanza was behind the attacks which resulted from an "acute psychosis." No motive has been determined and initial reports confirm Lanza was wearing a mask, bulletproof vest, and carrying two handguns, one believed to be a .223 caliber rifle and gained entry to the school under the premise of visiting his mother. Lanza was found dead, resulting from a self inflicted gunshot wound, on the scene of the crime.

Today's attack at Sandy Hook, described at best as "horrific" by eyewitnesses and authorities, was the second deadliest attack in the history of the U.S. Initial reports confirm Lanza entered his mother's classroom and began the shooting spree. Another adult, believed to be Lanza's father, was found dead at a secondary location.

President Obama and Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy have addressed the incident with press conferences. In highly emotional Obama's address to the nation mourning this unfathomable act, he gave his condolences and assured that every resource to "investigate this heinous crime, care for the victims, counsel their families" will be available to the families, staff, and faculty of the school.

Regardless of politics, today's heartbreaking tragedy in Newtown highlights the dire need to unite and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
