Earlier we reported that Twitter was down due to a Denial-of-service (DOS) attack. While the Twitter team was finally able to restore the service, it turns out that it wasn't the only site which faced the attack.
An enormous number of websites including major sites like Facebook, Livejournal and some Google services were attacked in what appeared to be a sophisticated and co-ordinated distributed-denial-of-service (DDOS) attack. Guardian reports that widespread outages were experienced across various websites and even Google wasn't spared, though Google's robust infrastructure survived these attacks easily.
The Twitter team said on its blog that it is working closely with the affected companies to determine the source of this attack. Even Google is said to be actively involved in the investigations which attempt to to uncover the perpetrators behind such a large scale cyber attack.
