A Nigerian man arrested for dumping more than 70 dead babies. The BBC reports an employee of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital was caught by local police toting bags of dead babies. The man intended to discard the bodies rather than than pay burial fees at the cemetery he was supposed to take the corpses too. Police have begun an indepth investigation of the incident and the hospital is in full cooperation with authorities. An initial investigation, as Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Frannk Mba reports, has led to the arrest of several workers in the Department of Morbid and Anatomy at the hospital. Officer Mba does not believe any of the corpses have been used in rituals stating "We are sure that the suspect is neither a ritualist nor a murderer nor a trafficker. Other contending issues like corruption and abuse of office will be investigated."
A hospital spokesperson finds the arrests an "ambarrassment to the organization." The spokesperson further explained that the establishment hires contractors to bury the corpses that are abandoned outside hospitals by families to poor to afford morgue fees and too devastated to manage their baby's death/s.
Officials and community members are in disbelief of the hospital's negligence in better managing and supervising the burials.
