Authorities have said that Paris Hilton has been arrested by the police on cocaine possession charges late Friday night. The 29-year-old socialite’s car was stopped on a Las Vegas street.
Las Vegas police spokesman Marcus Martin said Hilton was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on the cocaine charge.
The police said the heiress was later released on her own recognizance.
Hilton was in a car driven by a friend when it was stopped about 11:30 p.m. on Friday after police officers noticed what they suspected to be marijuana smoking blowing out of it.
"Officers noticed a vehicle leaving smoke trail of a controlled substance (and) made a stop based on that," Martin said.
Upon checking the car, the police found what appeared to be a drug on Hilton and
later tests showed that it was cocaine, Martin said.
A crowd gathered around the scene after passer-bys recognized Hilton.
A police watch commander Lt. Wayne Holman said Hilton released early on Saturday morning. He said the man who was driving the car was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of drugs. No other details were given.
Hilton was previously arrested in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on suspicion of
possession of marijuana. But the case was dropped.
