Priest drowns baby during Baptism in an Eastern European church. Father Valentin faces charges of accidential homicide following the Baptism of a newborn baby boy which left the infant dead. The baptism was held at a church in Moldova. The baby was six weeks old when the religious ceremony was performed. Father Valentin apparently failed to cover the baby's mouth during the ceremony, per reports of UK's The Sun. The baby reportedly died en route to a local hospital. An autopsy revealed that the newborn had "water on his lungs" and in fact drowned during the Baptism.
The infant's father Dumitru Gaidou provided Romania's Publica TV with raw video footage of the baby's baptism. Authorities have begun an investigation into the baby's death and perhaps the footage will provide all the evidence police officials need to secure a case against Valentin. Eyewitnesses, including Mr. Gaidou, stated that the baby "couldn't inhale, his face turned blue, and he was foaming at the mouth. He [Valentin] said we should not interrupt this, their ritual. We couldn't believe it that he just put his hand over his belly and over the head and submerged him three times in the water."
If convicted, Valentin only faces three years in jail.
