Roy Ashburn, was arrested early Wednesday morning in Bakersfield, California for suspicion of drunk driving. The Republican Senator was picked up by police after leaving a gay nightclub with a male passenger in a state registered vehicle. He was driving a black Tahoe which was impounded following the arrest.
Ashburn, a reportedly harsh opponent of gay rights, had been drinking at Faces, a gay nightclub in Sacramento, California before authorities arrested him. Ashburn issued an apology following the incident. He went on record to say "I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me - my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate."
