The release of Toyota's long awaited FT-86 sports car has been delayed by two years, according to sources inside Japan. The FT-86, a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru, was supposed to be released in 2011. Designed as an affordable but fun-to-drive sports coupe, the FT-86 has held fans worldwide breathless since it debuted as a concept car at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.
The delays are said to be caused by styling changes and a softening of the worldwide demand for sports cars. Toyota will watch the launch of Honda's Hybrid CR-Z sports car to determine if the FT-86 needs to be offered in hybrid form.
