A train crash in West Bengal, India kills passengers and leaves many wounded. A Sealdah bound Cooch Behar Uttarbanga Express train collided with a Bhagalpur-Ranchi Vanachal Express train near a station in Shantiniketan at 2:05 a.m. The Bhaglpur-Ranchi Vanachal Express train was bound for Ranchi when it was struck from behind by the Uttarbanga Express while at platform number 4. Officials have not ascertained the exact number of those injured or killed as many bodies are still trapped in the wreckage.
Railway minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the scene of the wreck and ordered an investigation into the crash. Banerjee stated to reporters at the site: "I am suspicious about the cause of the accident. We have some doubt in our mind. Whatever happened is not a casual thing. We will take all strong step against those who are behind this."
Passengers of the Vananchal Express were reported as seriously injured or dead. The driver and assistant driver of the Uttarbanga Express died as a result of the crash with many of its passengers reeling from the crash.
