In a promo for the new season of "America's Next Top Model," Tyra Banks praised the tiny waist of a contestant, which has led to much talk about the champion of healthy body sizes.
"You have the smallest waist in the world ... look at this waist!" Tyra exclaims in the promo to a contestant with an unusually miniscule midsection.
Her comments and praise has led critics to hell her: ‘big fat hypocrite.’
In the edited promo, Tyra's comments are followed by photo shoot director Jay Manual joking that the model would inspire "Top Model" judge J. Alexander to "eat Tic Tacs and watercress for the rest of the season." For those who have seen Tyra stand up for all healthy bodies and discourage the use of the word "diet" on the show over the years, the promo seemed very hypocritical.
"I think that Tyra praising her skeletal look kind of sends a confusing message," says CNN's "Showbiz Tonight" host Brooke Anderson in a debate today. Anderson then asked her two guests to weigh in Tyra’s hypocrisy.
Radio host Cooper Lawrence remained positive, saying the edited version of what happened was seen by people.
"I know Tyra pretty well, and I can guarantee you 100% the next comment out of Tyra's mouth was 'Are you healthy?'" Lawrence argued.
Lawrence added that the later comment was included in the promo to put controversy and "we wouldn't be here talking about it ... [Tyra] wants us to watch her show, right, so she's going to say something provocative."
But radio host Carolina Bermudez disagreed, saying "It's irresponsible for [Tyra] to allow this clip to be released because she's looking for ratings, she's looking for viewers ... young women are going to see this and aspire to be like this model."
Banks's representatives responded with "no comment."
