Why Is Toyota Recalling 1.1 Million Corolla and Matrix Models?

Toyota has announced a voluntary recall of 1.1 million model year 2005 to 2008 Corolla and Matrix models to fix potential problems with the Engine Control Module (ECM). Due to a manufacturing issue, a circuit board within the ECM can crack, leading to a wide array of problems. On the minor side, a crack can result in a false "Check Engine" light; in extreme cases, a crack can result in the car stalling under normal driving conditions, increasing the driver's risk of an accident.

The recall is expected to begin in Septemeber, but it will take Toyota dealers some time to amass the parts required to complete the recall.
