Toyota Fined $16.4 Million by the U.S. Department of Transportation

Toyota was fined a record $16.4 million by the United States Department of Transportation for failing to promptly disclose problems with their accelerator pedals sticking on certain models. When a manufacturer becomes aware of such a potential safety issue, they have five business days to notify the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), otherwise they face fines per vehicle, per day. Had the fine to Toyota not been capped at $16.4 million (the maximum allowed by law), the automaker could have been fined as much as $6,000 per vehicle involved in the recall, for a fine of nearly $14 billion.
