Western Governors University or WGU is a private, non-profit online university with its main administration office located in Salt Lake, Utah. An online university, WGU was founded in 1997 by a group of governors of 19 U.S. states who wanted to improve the quality of post-secondary education while making it available to a greater number of students in the Western part of the country.
As a fully accredited online university, WGU offers online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Business, Teacher Education, Information Technology, and Health Professions, including Nursing. The university is noted for its competency-based learning model through which students earn their degree by showing increased competence in their chosen field rather than the number of accumulated hours they spend attending classes.
In 2011, Western Governors University Online was ranked #17 among all online colleges and universities by The Best Colleges.
WGU is divided into four academic colleges; namely, College of Business; Teachers College; College of Information Technology; and College of Health Professions. Each of these colleges offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, WGU accepts only applications made by students within the United States and select areas of Canada. Exceptions would be active military personnel whose families are stationed overseas.
Cost of tuition at WGU is not charged per credit or per course but at a flat rate per term of six months. A term can start on the first day of any month. Tuition and fees per term for Nursing programs is US$3,250; for B.S, Nursing (Prelicensure), US$4,250; for MBA programs, US$3,250; and US$2,890 each for Business Bachelor’s Programs; Information Technology Degrees; and all Teacher’s College Programs. A library fee of US$45 is also charged per term. Financial aid is extended in the form of Federal loans and scholarships.
