What Is Bmw's 'Active Sound Design'

BMW Group is employing technology called 'Active Sound Design' to make the driving experience more fulfilling.  Currently under development on the Mini Clubman Diesel and the BMW 635d Coupe, 'Active Sound Design' uses a series of mocrophones, signal processing and the vehicles stereo system to emulate the sound of a V8 motor.  Why?  Because drivers much prefer the sound of a well tuned V8 to the sound of a diesel motor.

Active Sound Design remains under development, with no short term plans for deployment just yet.  The technology may have an application on electric powered vehicles, as their lack of propulsion noise makes them hazardous to pedestrians and bicyclists.
