What Is Body Butter?

Body butter is a beauty product that is meant to moisturize the skin. Body butter provides a heavier moisturizing action as compared to the average skin lotion or cream. The low water content of body butter contributes to this moisturizing action.

Usually, body butter is made with a seed or nut oil as the main ingredient. The oil is extracted from the chosen nut or seed and then mixed with other essential oils and ingredients to create the body butter. There are many different kinds of body butter available in the market today, with many of them being touted as organic. Alternatively, one can make his own body butter at home, although it may be more convenient to purchase ready made ones.

Perhaps the most common kind of body butter is shea butter. This is made from shea nuts, which contain vitamins A, E, and F in considerable quantities. These vitamins have properties that are beneficial to the skin. Shea butter is popularly used to moisturize dry skin, as well as to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It is even used to prevent stretch marks when a woman is pregnant and can repair sun-damaged skin.

Other popular kinds of body butter include mango, cocoa, and kukui. Mango body butter contains a lot of vitamins A, E, and beta carotene. Aside from moisturizing the skin, beta carotene is known to have healing properties. Cocoa body butter contains antioxidants as well as other minerals such as potassium and iron. Kukui nuts also contain a lot of vitamins plus fatty acids, which are especially good for moisturizing and rejuvenating the skin.
