What Is the Bowel?

The bowel is the term used when referring to the intestines which are crucial for the completion of the digestive process as they move waste out of the body through the colon on the way for total excretion from the body. Since there are two intestines, the large and small intestine, the bowels can also be differentiated the same way as the large or primary bowel and the small or secondary bowel.

Most health problems that occur in the abdominal area are referred to as bowel disorders. Bowel disorders with abdominal pain, discomfort and wind as a symptom are common due to the constant activity that the intestines are subjected to. Most of the problems that occur in the bowels are minor and are a result of what would have been consumed and which the body is struggling to digest. The most common bowel problems are constipation and diarrhea. It is best to simply change the diet or use over the counter medication to alleviate the discomfort. Diarrhea usually requires an increased intake of fiber and being aware of the foods which make the bowels uncomfortable. Constipation requires more fluid intake, over the counter milk of magnesium or an enema.

Bowel problems that require specialized medical treatment include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcers as they deter the body from absorbing all the necessary nutrients. For a healthy bowel with regular movements always include healthy, natural and fresh foods in your diet. Fibers, lots of water and vegetables aid smoother bowel movements.
