What Causes Wrinkles?

You will never hear someone comment positively about a woman whose face is beginning to show her age. Wrinkles on a man may be considered distinguished. Wrinkles on a woman are just revealing. People will say she is past her prime; she must not have taken proper care of her skin. Some people will even snicker quietly and remark how she must have lived a hard life. The bottom line is wrinkles on a man are acceptable and even attractive. Wrinkles on a woman are intolerable. It may be unfair, but it is the unfortunate truth.

Unless you understand what causes wrinkles, you probably won’t be able to delay them. You have to know the causes to avoid the things that cause wrinkles to emerge. Some experts do believe genetics play a role in when, where, and how many wrinkles occur. But environmental factors also impact the eventual state of your skin. Limit your exposure to things which are known triggers which cannot be avoided and avoid the things you can. Aging is a battle which can be won, or at least end in a draw.

Wrinkling is the result of aging. The aging process itself causes the skin renewal process to slow down. Your skin cells divide at a slower rate. Your inner most layer of skin becomes thinner. Fat cells, of course, become slower. And the elastin and collagen which holds your skin taunt grows lax and loosens. The skin then begins to sag and wrinkle. There are some environmental and behavioral factors which can influence the age at which these dreaded lines begin to appear and how pronounced the wrinkles will be. Genetics also play a role. Some people are just genetically predisposed to the bane of aging known as wrinkles. But there are some actions you can take to slow down the hands of time and fend off those wrinkles.

Sun exposure is a major contributing factor when it comes to wrinkles. You may envy the dark tans on the sun worshipers now. But if you are smart enough not to follow in their sun tan oil trail, it will be your skin everyone will be envying several years down the road. If the tanners do manage to avoid disfigurement or death from skin cancer, the effects of the sun or tanning beds will cause premature wrinkling. The wrinkles from excessive or chronic sun exposure without sun block or sunscreen isn’t pretty; think wise old Indian chief skin. Stay out of the sun when you can. Wear sun block when you cannot. And stay away from tanning beds.

Smoking is another bad habit which causes premature wrinkles. Smoking cigarettes causes a reduction in the development of new collagen. Collagen is one of the main players in maintaining skin health and keeping your face smooth and young. When collagen production slows down, the skin on your face begins to show lines and creases. Since collagen is necessary to keep the skin on your face taunt and plump, smokers may want to stop their nasty habit and save their skin.

Facial expressions can eventually cause deep lines or wrinkles to permanently mar your face. A person who habitually furrows their brows in concentration or anger will eventually see permanent wrinkles lining their foreheads. Do you drink from a straw often? The sucking motion will wedge deep lines on the sides of your mouth where your muscles contract. Squinting at the sun will cause crows feet to eventually emerge. Facial expressions are not something you probably consciously put a lot of thought into, but you should pay attention to the more pronounced ones which cause your muscles to contract and your skin to move.
