What Is DNS ?

DNS or the Domain Name System is a naming system which is used to name and identify the computers, servers or any other object which connects to the world wide web (internet) or a particular network.

Using the Domain Name System, domain names are assigned to websites on the internet which can be easily understood and remembered by humans.

The domain names are translated into computer readable IP addresses by what are known as Domain Name Servers (also abbreviated as DNS). As you can see in the above diagram, the domain name space is a hierarchical structure. It is like a tree assigning names starting from the top-level domain to a sub domain and so on and so forth.
