What Is a Facial Peel?

One of the cosmetic treatments for the skin is a facial peel. This is a chemical treatment that can either be performed by a dermatologist or done at home with some over-the-counter products. The purpose of the facial peel is to help reduce skin blemishes. Age spots, freckles and light scarring are some of the imperfections of the skin that can be reduced with a facial peel. The facial peel is also known as a chemical peel and undergoing the treatment can significantly improve the skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It can even rejuvenate skin that has been damaged through exposure to the sun.

Commercial products like home dermabrasion systems and facial peel creams are also sold in drug stores and the cosmetics section of department stores. These are products that allow people to perform a facial peel at home. These home products contain mild chemicals along with alphahydroxy acids that facilitate the sloughing off of dead skin cells, thus allowing a layer of new skin to appear, which looks fresher. Usually the facial peel creams are applied to the face and left there for a few minutes before being rinsed off. Other facial peel systems also have a specific dermabrasion tool used to help in the exfoliating process. Facial peel treatments are still harsh to the skin despite its benefits.

It is not uncommon for some people to develop an allergic reaction to the chemicals. That’s why it is often recommended that the chemicals to be used are applied to a small patch of skin first, usually on the inside of the arm, an area that is sensitive to determine if the user will develop an allergic reaction.
