What Is the Iditarod?

The Iditarod is a dog sled race in Alaska that is considered to be the last great race on earth.

"From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1150 miles in 10 to 17 days." via

Considered by some to be a life quest, the Iditarod has rich history and is Alaska's defining sports event of the year. It is famous internationally and has been the center of quite a few movies both here in the States and abroad.

Some recent winners include:
Doug Swinglie,Jeff King,Martin Buser,Susan Butcher, and Lance Mackey.

I was drawn to the legend of the race as a boy by reading the book Woodsong by Gary Paulsen who was one of my favorite authors growing up.
