What Is Inositol?

Inositol is a nutrient found in grapefuit and other foods. It is also synthesized from glucose by the human body. Inositol is widely recognized as an essential nutrient, playing a role in many important functions within the body.

In the health industry, inositol has become a popular natural treatment for various mental problems like depression, anxiety and even obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It has also been used to treat impotence and used as a chemopreventive for lung cancer patients.

In a scientific study, inositol was found to outperform the established pharmaceutical fluvoxamine as a treatment for panic disorder. As a natural ingredient, it also had far fewer side effects than the manufactured drug.

Another study found that four weeks of supplementation with inositol offered significant benefits for patients suffering from clinical depression. Yet another study showed that a dual inositol/folic acid supplement was able to improve erectile dysfunction in 176 patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Less established but still promising, inositol supplementation is being used as a treatment for OCD sufferers, and while seemingly effective, scientists are still working to understand why. Perhaps most promising of all, inositol supplements are being used as effective chemopreventives for lung cancer patients.
