What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage is the activity of manipulating muscles and connective tissue in the body. This is done by applying pressure on specific parts of the body. The aim of massage therapy is to loosen up the muscles which may have gotten tight for one reason or another. As such, massage therapy can deal with a wide variety of conditions. People who have no serious health problems except a tight back from a long day of work can benefit from massage therapy. At the same time, athletes who have suffered from a sports related injury can also benefit from massage therapy. Obviously, though, people belonging to the latter group will need highly trained therapists to do the massage as they can do more damage than good if they do not know what they are doing.

There is a wide range of massage therapies, each with a distinctive characteristic. Some of the most popular kinds of massage therapies today are shiatsu, Thai massage, Swedish massage, hot stone massage, and sports massage. There are some therapists that offer a combination of massages to achieve the desired results.

Undergoing massage therapy can be a strange experience for the uninitiated. It is quite understandable as dressing down to your knickers in front of a stranger may not seem the most comfortable thing. After a while, though, one gets used to it and if one goes to the same therapist over and over again, this issue is quickly resolved. Getting a massage is a pleasurable experience once one gets used to it.
